In most cases, if your area is experiencing flooding, DO NOT EVACUATE. Roadways become exceptionally dangerous in floods, as floodwater can trap you in your vehicle. For the vast majority of flood events, the safest course of action is to SHELTER INDOORS. If you are outside recreating, then seek high ground. Most deaths from flooding occur when people attempt to leave their home or sheltered location.

Before Flooding

  • Maintain Short-Term Mitigation if you reside in a post-wildfire flood area or are in an area prone to monsoon flooding.
    • If you expect flooding, then one of the best things you can do to mitigate impacts to your home is to construct short-term mitigation. Most often, this means building a sandbag wall.
    • When building a sandbag wall, here are some key things to keep in mind.
      • Only use a sandbag walls to mitigate a residence, not a property line or outbuilding.

During a Flood

After a Flood

  • Use personal protection, such as gloves and goggles, when cleaning up from flood impacts.
  • Do not drink well water without testing.

  • Keep current on your tetanus shot and seek a tetanus shot if you have suffered an injury related to a flood
  • Reduce risk of mosquito-borne illness by draining standing water
  • Practice Food Safety â€� do not consume flood-contaminated food or drink
