The Corral Fire, which burned over 200 acres east of Mormon Lake last week, was “human caused, according to the Coconino National Forest.

Details of the fire’s origins, however, remain under investigation.

The fire was first reported on the morning of Monday, May 26, Memorial Day, near the intersection of Forest Service Roads 82 and 125, about 2 1/2 miles away from Mormon Lake and about 24 miles southeast of Flagstaff. The fire’s location was along the main access route to Kinnikinick Lake.

The fire was burning in mixed fuels of grass, juniper and ponderosa pine, according to the U.S. Forest Service. On the day of the fire’s ignition, the Coconino National Forest announced a “full-suppression response using forest roads as firebreaks. One Hotshot crew, four wildland engines and one water tender were assigned to the fire. The blaze was contained by the end of the day, at a total of 223 acres.

As of Monday, June 2, no more Forest Service resources were formally assigned to the fire, but wildland engines were conducting daily monitoring for any lingering fire activity.
