Spotlight on Climate: Taking local control of renewable energy

Spotlight Logo

Coconino County is overflowing with renewable energy, so why can’t Flagstaff use it? We have 842 megawatts (MW) of wind power already in operation or currently being built. Babbitt Ranches is also installing an 80 MW solar power plant and will begin building the CO Bar solar facility next year, which will produce 1,000 MW of power with battery storage capacity of 1,100 MW. Since one megawatt powers approximately 1,000 homes, this is a cornucopia of green, sustainable energy.

However, none of that renewable energy will reach the residents of Flagstaff, because Phoenix-based utility Salt River Project will deliver that power to its own service territory.
