Flagstaff Little League’s City Majors Tournament begins on Tuesday, the first edition of the annual event following the merger of Continental Little League and West Flagstaff Little League.
Held at Continental Park’s Dawson Field and Mark Grace Field at Arroyo Park, the tournament is made up of the nine-team Majors Division for FLL, which finished its regular season on May 22.
Finishing with a record of 11-4-1 during the regular season, Teal Snake holds the top seed in the tournament thanks to a 5-0 start in the regular season. Its four losses all came against the other top four finishers during the season, which began in early April.
Gray’s 10-5-1 record was good for second place during the regular season, with two wins against Teal Snake. The team finished its regular season with a 15-4 victory against the top seed on Tuesday, May 20, capping off a seven-game win streak to conclude its regular-season schedule.
Tying with records of 10-6, Black and White split their two regular-season meetings, as well as against both Gray and Teal Snake. Black, whose run differential and runs scored just edged out White, finished the season with wins in three of its final four games. Meanwhile, White wrapped up the season with six straight wins and victories in seven of its final eight games.
Both Red and Red Snake finished with 7-8-1 records, splitting their two games against one another. Red won five of its final six games in the regular season, and holds wins against Gray and White, as well as a tie with Teal Snake. Red Snake beat White early in the season, and won four times in a stretch of five games during the middle of its schedule, with the streak only interrupted by a tie.
Pink placed seventh in the regular season with a 6-10 record that included a 4-2 start and two victories against second-place Gray.
Wrapping up the standings, Teal Pinstripes and Purple finished the regular season at 4-11-1. Teal Pinstripes beat third-place Black twice, while Purple beat Black and Red once. After splitting their two games earlier in the season, the two teams played each other for the third time this season on Thursday, with Purple winning 11-2.
Tuesday’s schedule currently includes Black against Red Snake at 5 p.m. on Mark Grace Field, White against Red at 5 p.m. on Dawson Field, Teal Snake facing Purple at 7:30 p.m. on Mark Grace Field and Gray playing Pink at 7:30 p.m. on Dawson Field.
AAA City Tournament
Beginning on Wednesday, May 21, FLL’s 11-team AAA tourney is also being played at Continental Park, Mark Grace Field at Arroyo Park and Joe Garagiola Field at Joel Montalvo Park.
Through the first two rounds, the top four teams from the regular season remain in the winner’s bracket.
Top-seeded Teal Snake defeated Black 9-8 on May 22 to reach the semifinals against No. 4-seeded Red, which reached the semifinals with a 12-2 victory against Green Camo on Tuesday, May 21. The teams will play for a spot in the winner’s bracket finals on Wednesday, May 28, at 7:30 p.m.
No. 2-seeded Flag beat Black Serpientes, 13-3, to reach the semifinals, where it will face No. 3 Red Snake, which beat Gray Pinstripes 10-3 on May 22. The teams will also play for a winner’s bracket finals berth at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28.
The tournament’s consolation bracket, with the winner reaching the championship round, will resume on Tuesday, May 27.
