Coconino High School's Wylan Smith and Bruce Larsen, Flagstaff High School's Colt McCallie and Northland Prep's Aaron Nicol all returned to the Valley this past weekend for the Arizona Decathlon/Heptathlon State Championships hosted at Red Mountain High School in Mesa.Â
Competing in their multis on Friday and Saturday, Smith finished seventh among the 24 girls entered into the heptathlon, and McCallie led the way among the trio of boys in the decathlon with his seventh-place finish, followed closely by Nicol in eighth and Larsen in 17th out of the 24 athletes participating.
Smith -- who had competed in the 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles, shot put and javelin in the Division III state championship meet earlier this month -- finished among the top 10 in three of the seventh events.
Throwing a best mark of 107 feet, 7 inches, Smith placed fourth in the javelin throw, while a 15.55 in the 100m hurdles and a 2:37.87 in the 800-meters placed her sixth in both events. Smith's time in the 100m hurdles contributed 770 points to her final score of 4,008, the most for any single event during the championship meet. Smith also placed 12th in the high jump (4 feet, 7.5 inches), long jump (15 feet, 8.75 inches) and the shot put (26 feet, 11 inches). In the 200m, Smith ran a 27.48 for a 17th-place finish and 672 points to her total.
McCallie earned a victory in pole vault during the meeting, clearing 14 feet, 9 inches for 760 points while also placing second in the 100m with a time of 11.04 for 852 points. Finishing seventh at 5,502 points, McCallie's 100m time earned him the highest total for a single event.
The Flagstaff senior also placed eighth in both the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 5 inches and the 400m with a time of 53.28, followed by a 12th-place finish in the 110m hurdles in 17.15. McCallie's other finishes included a 13th-place finish in the 1500m (5:16.77), 15th in discus (89 feet, 4 inches), 15th in shot put (32 feet, 11.25 inches), 19th in long jump (18 feet, 3.75 inches) and 23rd in javelin (85 feet, 6 inches).
Nicol, who competed in the 110m hurdles, shot put and discus at the D-V championship meet, earned a victory and two second-place finishes in events at the multis championships.Â
With a throw of 40 feet, 10.5 inches, Nicol took first in shot put, while a throw of 121 feet, 1 inch in discus, and time of 4:39.16 in the 1500m placed him second in both events. Finishing with a score of 5,432 points, Nicol also placed eighth in high jump (5 feet, 5 inches), ninth in the 400m (53.65), 14th in long jump (18 feet, 10 inches), 15th in 110m hurdles (17.50), 17th in pole vault (9 feet, 2.25 inches), 21st in javelin (97 feet, 1 inch) and 24th in the 100m (12.03). Garnering 686 points in discus, Nicol earned at least 600 points in five of the 10 events.
Larsen earned top-five finishes in a trio of events, led by a fourth-place finish in the 1500m at 4:48.91, and fifth-place finishes in the high jump at 5 feet, 7.25 inches, and the 400m in 52.20.
Scoring 4,965 points, Larsen's 400m time earned him 716 points followed by 675 in the 100m with a 17th-place finish and 625 in the 1500m. Larsen's other results included a 15th-place finish in javelin (115 feet, 4 inches), 18th in shot put (32 feet, 6.25 inches), 20th in long jump (18 feet, 3.25 inches), 20th in pole vault (8 feet, 10.25 inches), 21st in 110m hurdles (18.80) and 22nd in discus (72 feet, 7 inches).
