Clearing the air: Lung health is inextricably linked to a person's overall well-being

On a play off the Prohibition era poem, “The Lips That Touch Liquor Shall Never Touch Mine�, the late actor Tony Randall declared to a cigarette-smoking talk host, “Lips that touch cigarettes will never touch mine.� Randall’s statement fit his famed character Felix Unger, the uptight hypochondriac in the TV sitcom based on Neil Simon’s play and the subsequent movie, “The Odd Couple�. 

Whether in character or sincere, Randall was right. The Centers for Disease Control calls cigarette smoking the top cause of preventable disease and death. Smoking’s not only responsible for 480,000 deaths each year in the U.S., but it can shorten users� lives by 10 years.
