Gardening Etcetera: Surprising Spring Cover Crops

The threat of a spring snow smackdown keeps many experienced gardeners from getting too crazed about planting anything, except maybe pansies. As we segue into meteorological spring on March 1st, though, there is one type of cool weather planting, cover crops, that enhances soil fertility and readies gardens for later planting.

Cover crops can be a gardener’s secret weapon against insect pests, yet they are often overlooked because they are considered more appropriate for large-scale agricultural operations, and only for fall planting. It may come as a surprise, then, that certain cover crops can be planted in the spring, with maturity occurring in early to mid-summer � just in time to plant those short-season tomatoes.
