Republicans chose Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson as the next Speaker of the House. His election comes after a tumultuous weekslong quest for a new leader. Johnson was elected to Congress in 2016 and is currently serving his fourth term. He serves on the House Judiciary Committee and is the Vice Chairman of the House Republican Conference. Johnson also has two decades of experience as a lawyer specializing in constitutional law. He is a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump. Johnson served on Trump's defense during his Senate impeachment trials in 2019 and 2020; Trump was acquitted in both trials. Johnson worked to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election, organizing GOP House members to back a lawsuit contesting the results. He opposes abortion and believes same-sex marriage should be decided by the states not the Supreme Court. With Johnson as speaker, Louisiana now has two high-ranking GOP leaders in the House - the other being House Majority Leader Steve Scalise.
