Women's World Cup will expand to 48 teams in 2031

LOS ANGELES � The Women's World Cup will expand to 48 teams and 104 games in 2031, making it the largest and longest women's tournament in history, FIFA announced Friday. The event is widely expected to be held in the U.S., the only country to bid for the rights to the competition.

FIFA is scheduled to announce a host country next summer.

Canada will be one of the teams to beat at the Women's World Cup after winning a gold medal two years ago at the Tokyo Olympics. But there's ongoing drama surrounding the players and their federation back home. The Canadian women's team is seeking equal pay to the men's team and players have been negotiating a new contract with Canada Soccer for more than a year. The team says it was told that funding issues meant players wouldn't have any send-off matches in Canada ahead of the tournament in Australia and New Zealand. She's so talented she earned a spot on the U.S. team that will play in this summer's World Cup. A change in league rules also paved the way for two 15-year-olds to launch pro careers. The outspoken 37-year-old known for her Easter egg hair colors and the iconic victory pose she struck at the 2019 World Cup is the oldest player on the team now, so change was inevitable heading into the tournament that opens next month in Australia and New Zealand.
