When a good thing turns bad: Causes, effects and addressing chronic inflammation

In some cases, chronic inflammation occurs from an abnormal immune reaction that attacks normal tissues, like with rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and lupus.

Inflammation, like most flame-related things, is good when under control. Our bodies are wired with inflammation, ready to provide the necessary assistance at the site of an injury or do battle when we get exposed to harmful microbes. And like any battlefield, the results � pain, swelling, dead tissue, etc. � are not pleasant. Ideally the good guys win the battle and life returns to normal.

Sometimes our body’s inflammatory response occurs when we’re not injured or sick. Or the process does not end when it should. When this happens, it’s called chronic inflammation.
