Animal Welfare: Resources to help pet owners

Cat and Dog

Hi, I’m Diane Jarvis and I’m filling in for Pam Tharp this month. Some of you may recognize my name; I’ve been advocating for animals here in Flagstaff for over 20 years through Second Chance, Paw Placement and High Country Humane (HCH). I’m writing today as chair of the Outreach committee with the recently formed Animal Welfare Coalition.

I’d like to focus on a couple of my pet subjects: animal identification and helping pet owners find resources. One of the saddest things to see is an obviously loved pet come into the shelter, scared and confused, and watch the door each day for their family to come. Shelters do all they can to find those families, but without an ID tag or microchip, it can be hard. Statistically, shelter Return to Owner rates are very low; HCH reports that only about 10% of pets were returned to their family. That is only one in 10 lost pets redeemed at the shelter. How can that be?
