Arizona鈥檚 deer and elk still free of chronic wasting disease, Game and Fish says

The Arizona Game and Fish Department announced this week that it detected no cases of Chronic Wasting Disease -- a fatal neurological disease affecting deer, elk and related animals -- in over 1,500 samples collected in 2024.聽

No cases of chronic wasting disease (CWD) were identified in Arizona elk or deer in 2024, the state鈥檚 Game and Fish Department announced Sunday, May 18.

Though widespread in the continental United States, the fatal neurological disease, which can impact the populations of deer and related animals, has not been detected in Arizona since the department began monitoring for it in 1998.
