Living with smoke: Balancing the benefits and impacts of prescribed burns

In northern Arizona, fire is a natural and essential part of our ecosystems. After decades of fire suppression, however, our forests have become overgrown and unhealthy -- which increases the risk of larger, more severe wildfires.

To restore forest health, the Coconino National Forest is actively reintroducing fire into these ecosystems, along with mechanical thinning efforts, as part of the Wildfire Crisis Strategy. These combined approaches are designed to protect our watersheds, communities and other natural resources.



Katherine Sánchez Meador is the Coconino National Forest Partnership Coordinator and has worked for the Coconino National Forest in several capacities during her 20-year career.
