A great poet once said, 鈥淪ome are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them.鈥 While most don鈥檛 know the origin of the quote, those that are familiar with it might have forgotten that it was written by the Bard of Avon himself, William Shakespeare. It might be more surprising that the quote comes from a dialogue from the romantic comedy 鈥淭he Twelfth Night,鈥 which was recently performed by the Flagstaff Shakespeare Festival (Flag Shakes) as a part of their Shakespeare under the stars series.
For those unfamiliar with 鈥淭he Twelfth Night,鈥 it's a tale as old as time: a woman survives a shipwreck, then disguises herself as a man to find employment only to fall in love with her employer, who is actively sending the woman to woo another woman on his behalf, who then falls in love with our heroine disguised as a man鈥 Maybe a tale as old as time is a bit of a stretch; but it is a tale, and it is old. Ultimately, 鈥淭he Twelfth Night鈥 is about love, loss and identity.聽
