Flagstaff researchers continuing to study COVID five years after the start of the pandemic

COVID-19 first arrived in Coconino County on March 16, 2020, and local efforts to study the disease began not long after.

That April, health professors and students at Northern Arizona University (NAU) began work to forecast outbreaks in the area, using census data to predict the spots where it could spread and impact hospital systems in four counties. The Arizona COVID-19 Genomics Union also formed that month and began sequencing the virus to learn about specific strains.
