Judge's ruling limits scope of inmate death lawsuit against Coconino County, but plaintiffs push back

Gibson Benally is shown in an undated photograph provided by his family. Benally died in April 2022 while in the custody of the Coconino County Detention Facility. In a civil lawsuit filed last year, his family alleged his death was the result of denial of medical care. 

A federal judge has dismissed the majority of claims in a civil lawsuit filed against the Coconino County Detention Facility and its command staff for the 2022 death of Gibson Benally.

In response, attorneys for Benally’s daughter submitted an amended complaint last Friday, April 25, restating their allegations against all the original targets of the suit.
