On Feb. 12, 2025, Energy Fuels began hauling uranium ore from the Pinyon Plain Mine to the White Mesa Uranium Mill. According to a 2024 emergency response plan, approximately 10 24-ton trucks will leave the mine daily, embarking on a multistate journey through public lands, towns and waterways. Environmental and Indigenous groups have contested the mine and mill, citing the potential contamination of local areas. With the resumption of hauling, however, the risk for hazardous pollution is now spread across the roughly 300-mile route.
This is critical to the residents and visitors of Flagstaff. The uranium ore cuts through Flagstaff along Interstate 40, passing universities, residential areas and tourist destinations. Anyone who has driven on I-40 knows it is a busy road known for heavy traffic and inclement weather conditions not ideal for trucks carrying radioactive materials.
