Letter to the Editor: Arizona's land on 'chopping block' in bill

Letters

Arizona's land is precious to those of us who live here and to the tourists who flock here to spend money. If you like to hunt, fish, camp, hike, walk your dog, ride your ATV, target shoot, or otherwise enjoy the Forest Service and BLM lands surrounding us in this beautiful state, be aware that nearly 14.5 MILLION acres of our public lands in Arizona will be on the chopping block in a new amendment to the Senate's budget reconciliation bill. This includes Sabino Canyon in Tucson, lands around Lake Pleasant and Saguara Lake in the Valley, and the Inner Basin of the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff. (Not to mention nearly every single speck of Forest Service land surrounding Flagstaff.)

The Wilderness Society has compiled a map showing the massive swaths of our lands that will be taken from us, from almost every Western state, if this amendment to the reconciliation bill goes forward. The amendment mandates the sale of up to 3.3 million acres of public land, but it also authorizes the sale of much more: up to 258 million acres, all at breakneck speed with zero public input. Try to imagine what Arizona, and the American West, will look like without our public lands.
