Letter to the Editor: Local urges protesters to push further in efforts

Letters

On the same day that Donald Trump spent $45,000,000 on a parade strutting our country’s military power for his birthday, over 45,000,000 people protested at more than 2,000 demonstrations across our nation against his, likely, unconstitutional use of force against U.S. citizens and nonviolent, hard-working people who may not have the right papers but do not pose a threat to our country’s security. The protest here in Flagstaff likely topped 4,000 people, reportedly the largest protest in Flagstaff’s history.

While protesting is a visceral event, it is the beginning. Now, we each need to follow through to make certain that those rights guaranteed by the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and previously upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court are honored by this and all future presidents. Please choose one topic that you feel is essential and follow through on defending that right. Get your facts straight, as accuracy and clear explanations are essential. Each week, or more often, contact your state and federal congress(wo)man, send your article to local and regional newspapers, voice your opinion at a town hall (if your congressman shows up) and take the time to relax and enjoy life.
