Letter to the Editor: Kachina Village Firewise reaches out

Letters

There was a story last Sunday in the Phoenix paper about the risk communities in the wildland urban interface such as Flagstaff face from wildfire. It contained a great deal of good information. It is true that we who live near or in the forest face many challenges brought about by unfortunate development patterns and forest management existing for years. Many neighborhoods, including mine, Kachina Village, are at a high risk from wildfire due to proximity to the forest, being heavily overgrown with trees, and many lots with little or no measures taken to be firewise. Unfortunately, one key point in the story was incorrect. The author was told that "There's been a half-dozen initiatives to get Kachina Village to be a Firewise community, but they haven't stuck." This is not true. There has been only one such initiative, and thanks to community efforts, Kachina Village was certified as a Firewise Community in 2016. This effort has been challenging and somewhat inconsistent, but in light of recent events, we are renewing our efforts. For information, residents are encouraged to email us at [email protected].
