London Zoo: Serendipity and the hidden ecosystem in Antarctica

London Zoo

Serendipity regularly plays a role in scientific discovery, but only for those who know enough to appreciate the opportunity presented. Scientists who are knowledgeable about research that’s already been conducted are more likely to recognize the importance and relevance of an accidental discovery than someone less familiar with the field of study. Or, as the eminent chemist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur famously said during an 1854 lecture, “In the field of observation, chance favors only the prepared mind.

Chance findings notably led researchers to major discoveries such as pulsars, microwaves, and penicillin. In animals, serendipitous observations catapulted knowledgeable scientists towards big discoveries such as the hippocampus is responsible for spatial memories, serotonin is critical for mood regulation, animals have circadian rhythms, and how animals imprint on their parents soon after birth or hatching.
