Four Forest Restoration Initiative (4FRI) is an ongoing, large-scale restoration project involving four national forests in Northern Arizona identified as having highly destructive wildfire risk: the Coconino, Kaibab, Tonto, and Apache-Sitgreaves. The U.S. Forest Service is carrying out these fire-prevention efforts in collaboration with local, county, and state governments, non-profit organizations, educational institutes, and the public.
From 2010 to 2024, the initiative treated 1,275,240 hazardous fuel acres. Looking through fiscal year 2025, 4FRI plans to award approximately 25,000 acres of commercial thinning contracts, 7,500 acres of non-commercial hazardous fuel reductions, and more than 100,000 acres of prescribed burning.
