Second suspect in death of Sharon Nocki Yazzie receives 10-year sentence

Scott Richard Smith, whose testimony to prosecutors resulted in a murder conviction in the 2023 death of Sharon Nocki Yazzie, received a 10-year prison sentence in Coconino County Superior Court on Thursday, May 29.

The sentence was the minimum allowable under a plea agreement, which resolved five separate felony cases against Smith. Because of his cooperation with law enforcement and a promise to testify at trial if necessary, Smith was allowed to plead guilty to helping burn and conceal Nocki Yazzie’s body and to one count of possession of child pornography, in exchange for the dismissal of all other charges against him.
